Interesting Facts About Nasal Treatments

  • The world-famous physicians like Fabricius Hildanus, Paulus Aegineta and Claudius Galen also treated the polyps dexterously.
  •
  • Egyptian physicians believed that a bad smelling nose confirmed presence of polyps.
  •
  • Celsus said, “Large polyps dangled into the pharynx and on cold and damp days strangulate a man.”
  • A crude nasal speculum was used by Hippocrates, Haly Abbas- an eminent Islamic medicine expert, and the Indian Ayurvedic physicians in bygone eras. In fact, these speculums were an improvisation of the instruments employed for rectal and gynecological examinations.
  •
  • Fabricius Hildanus invented an aural speculum, which resembles the modern speculum.
  • Alfred Kirstein pioneered use of artificial light for nasal examination. He invented first headlight that inspired the modern headlights.
  •
  • In Greece, tampons and nasal packs soaked in copper salts and honey were used to prevent reoccurrence of polyps.
  •
  • The Roman physicians used turpentine and other irritating substances, calf tallow, goose fat and oily products to treat the polyps.

The nasal cycle

The nasal cycle (NC) is the spontaneous congestion and decongestion of the nasal mucosa during the day, where congestion of one side is accompanied by reciprocal decongestion of the contralateral side. It is based on the dilation/constriction of the venous cavernous tissue in the submucosa of the turbinates and septum, but also of the ethmoid sinuses. It is accepted that almost 70-80% of adults experience a regular NC, but a true periodicity/reciprocity exists only in 21-39% of the Population. NC is considered an ultradian rhythm of side-toside nasal mucosal engorgement with a phase length ranging from 30 min to 6h. As first described, in an ideal cycle, the two air passages should show reciprocal changes of equal amplitude, 180° out of phase, with an identical period and similar mean airflow, with total nasal flow remaining constant.

Contiues:Interesting Facts About Nasal Treatments

  • In 1933, Shenck and Kern suggested that nasal polyps were related to allergy. The polyps were commonly found in the ethmoid air cell system.
  • In 1940s, advancements in immuno-biology and immuno-histochemistry techniques enabled description of lymphocyte and eosinophil present in the polyps.
  • In 1959, Lurie discovered relationship between the polyps and cystic fibrosis for the first time.
  • In 1969, Beer and Samter threw light on the triad of asthma, nasal polyps and aspirin sensitivity.
  • In the end of the twentieth century, the first rigid and flexible fiber-optic endoscope was discovered. The invention changed the way upper aero-digestive tract was examined.
  • Since Hippocrates influence was strong during golden age of the Greek civilization, he is remembered as the father of medicine and rhinology. However, Susruta used highly advanced surgical techniques to treat nasal disorders. Hippocrates recorded disorders related to nasal polyps and fractures. He named the nasal growth as polypus, as it resembled to the polyps found in the sea.  He defined polyps as “the sacs of phlegm that cause nasal obstruction and derange the sense of smell.”
  • Hippocrates knew that nasal polyps are recurrent in nature.

Tinnitus Facts and Information

Tinnitus, often described as a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear, is a symptom that can be related to almost every known hearing problem. Tinnitus is not a disease, but it can be caused by exposure to loud sounds, middle or inner ear infections, tumors on the hearing nerve, and even wax on the eardrum.

Sometimes tinnitus can be medically or surgically treated. All patients with tinnitus should consult an ear, nose and throat physician (otolaryngologist) before seeking any other form of treatment.

Dealing with Tinnitus

Although psychological or emotional problems may be associated with tinnitus, it is a real problem -- not imagined. Almost all patients indicate that stress or tension makes their tinnitus worse. Tinnitus is difficult to describe because there is no standard terminology related to it. Family and friends have trouble understanding the problems tinnitus patients face because they cannot see or hear it themselves. Because tinnitus is so hard to describe and treat, patients may fall victim to self-pity and depression. Some tinnitus patients withdraw from social interactions and push family members and coworkers away--the very people who can help patients cope with the tinnitus problems

Interesting Facts About Nasal Treatments

1. The 1500 BCE records reveal that Egyptians mastered the art and skill of removing the cranial material through the nose to avoid any disfiguration of the face while mummifying the bodies.
2. Records of various rhinologic procedures practiced during 700 BCE are found in the Egyptian and Indian medical books.
3. In 5th century, Susruta, the famous Indian surgeon, invented nasal reconstructive flaps and rhinoplasty that are still used.
4. Do you know that physicians examined the anterior of the nose in candlelight until 16th century?
5. In 1744, Boerhaave introduced a ground-breaking idea: nasal polyps are elongated sinus membranes.

What is Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy is treatment for problems with speaking, language, and swallowing. It is given by a speech therapist, also called a speech-language pathologist. Speech therapy helps with using the voice properly and using the muscles to make the right sounds. It helps people understand language and express themselves. Speech therapy can also help a person learn to swallow again after a stroke or brain injury.

Speech therapy, or speech and language therapy, is treatment for problems with speaking, language, and swallowing. A person who gives this treatment is called a speech therapist or speech-language pathologist.

Speech therapy helps with the following problems:

  • Speech problems. These are problems with making the right sound, using the voice fully, and not straining.
  • Language and communication problems. These are problems with understanding language, expressing thoughts, or responding in a social situation.
  • Swallowing and feeding problems. These are problems with using the muscles in the mouth and throat to swallow.

Nose and Nasal Conditions

Your nose is important to your health. It filters the air you breathe, removing dust, germs, and irritants. It warms and moistens the air to keep your lungs and tubes that lead to them from drying out. Your nose also contains the nerve cells that help your sense of smell. When there is a problem with your nose, your whole body can suffer.

Many problems besides the common cold can affect the nose. They include

  1. Deviated septum - a shifting of the wall that divides the nasal cavity into halves
  2. Nasal polyps - soft growths that develop on the lining of your nose or sinuses
  3. Nosebleeds
  4. Rhinitis - inflammation of the nose and sinuses sometimes caused by allergies. The main symptom is a runny nose.
  5. Nasal fractures, also known as a broken nose

The upper part of the nose consists mostly of bone. The lower part of the nose gains its support from cartilage. Inside the nose is a hollow cavity (nasal cavity), which is divided into two passages by a thin sheet of cartilage and bone called the nasal septum. The bones of the face contain the paranasal sinuses, which are hollow cavities that open into the nasal cavity (see Nose and Sinuses).

Because of its prominent position, the nose is especially vulnerable to injury, including fractures. Bacterial nasal infections, nosebleeds, objects inserted in the nose, and polyps also can affect the nose. The mucous membrane of the nose may become inflamed (rhinitis). This inflammation may spread to the lining of the sinuses (rhinosinusitis).

The sinuses are hollow air-filled areas within your skull. They connect the space between the nostrils and nasal passage and act like balloons, reducing your skull's weight, allowing you to keep your head upright. They also regulate skull temperature and allow the voice to resonate.

Sinuses are found in the following four pairs:

  • Frontal sinuses (in the forehead)
  • Maxillary sinuses (behind the cheek bones)
  • Sphenoid sinuses (behind the eyes)
  • The sinuses contain defenses against germs. When you get sick and mucous begins to fill up the sinuses, bacteria may begin to grow. Once the bacteria begin to grow, it may stick to the lining of the sinuses and cause a sinus infection.

Tonsillectomy

A tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils. Tonsils are two small glands located in the back of your throat. Tonsils house white blood cells to help you fight infection, but sometimes the tonsils themselves become infected.

Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils that can make your tonsils swell and give you a sore throat. Frequent episodes of tonsillitis might be a reason you need to have a tonsillectomy. Other symptoms of tonsillitis include fever, trouble swallowing, and swollen glands around your neck. Your doctor may notice that your throat is red and your tonsils are covered in a whitish or yellow coating. Sometimes, the swelling can go away on its own. In other cases, antibiotics or a tonsillectomy might be necessary.
A tonsillectomy can also be a treatment for breathing problems, like heavy snoring and sleep apnea.

Cochlear Implants

While most people with hearing loss are quite successful with hearing aids, there are some individuals with severe to profound hearing loss for whom hearing aids do not provide enough benefit. For these people with severe damage to the sensory cells in the inner ear,a cochlear implant is often the best option for better hearing. These tiny, complex medical devices work differently than hearing aids. Rather than amplifying sound, which helps an individual with residual hearing ability, a cochlear implant provides the sense of sound by stimulating the auditory nerve directly. Cochlear implants do not cure hearing loss or restore hearing, but they do provide an opportunity for the severely hard of hearing or deaf to perceive the sensation of sound by bypassing the damaged inner ear.

Transoral robotic surgery

Transoral robotic surgery is the name given to using the assistance of a surgical robot to remove a tumor from the mouth or throat. In TORS, the arms of the robot are strategically placed inside the mouth of the patient. The surgeon sits in a console away from the patient and can control the arms of the robot while sitting in his console.
TORS is a relatively new approach to remove cancers from areas in the throat that are difficult to access, including the base of tongue and low down in the bottom of the tonsil. These two areas, along with other parts of the oropharynx (soft palate, posterior oropharynx wall), remain the main tumor sites for which TORS is used.

Sleep_apnea is a potentially serious sleep #disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night's sleep, you might have sleep apnea.
