 Hearing loss, also called as hearing impairment, is a partial or complete inability to hear. A deaf person has little to no hearing. Hearing loss may arise in one or both ears. In some people, particularly older people, hearing loss can result in loneliness. Hearing loss can be temporary or permanent. Hearing loss may be caused by a number of factors like genetics, age, exposure to noise, some infections, birth complications, trauma to the ear, and certain medications or toxins. Hearing loss can be caused by many different reasons, some of which can be successfully treated with medicine or surgery, depending on the disease process. Hearing loss can be characterised by which part of the auditory system is damaged. There are three basic types of hearing loss conductive, sensorineural, and mixed hearing loss.

• The world-famous physicians like Fabricius Hildanus, Paulus Aegineta and Claudius Galen also treated the polyps dexterously.

The nasal cycle

The nasal cycle (NC) is the spontaneous congestion and decongestion of the nasal mucosa during the day, where congestion of one side is accompanied by reciprocal decongestion of the contralateral side. It is based on the dilation/constriction of the venous cavernous tissue in the submucosa of the turbinates and septum, but also of the ethmoid sinuses.It is accepted that almost 70-80% of adults experience a regular NC, but a true periodicity/reciprocity exists only in 21-39% of the Population. NC is considered an ultradian rhythm of side-toside nasal mucosal engorgement with a phase length ranging from 30 min to 6h. As first described, in an ideal cycle, the two air passages should show reciprocal changes of equal amplitude, 180° out of phase, with an identical period and similar mean airflow, with total nasal flow remaining constant.

• In 1933, Shenck and Kern suggested that nasal polyps were related to allergy. The polyps were commonly found in the ethmoid air cell system.
• In 1940s, advancements in immuno-biology and immuno-histochemistry techniques enabled description of lymphocyte and eosinophil present in the polyps.
• In 1959, Lurie discovered relationship between the polyps and cystic fibrosis for the first time.

Tinnitus, often described as a ringing or buzzing sound in the ear, is a symptom that can be related to almost every known hearing problem. Tinnitus is not a disease, but it can be caused by exposure to loud sounds, middle or inner ear infections, tumors on the hearing nerve, and even wax on the eardrum.
